Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – We often skip publishing on holiday weeks as readership drops dramatically with so many traveling and celebrating, but we wanted to get something out this week. We want to wish all of our U.S. readers a Happy Thanksgiving. I’m staying here in Las Vegas, so if you are also not spending it with family, rest assured you aren’t the only one.

It reminds me of one of my most infamous Thanksgiving meals, but not for the reasons you’d suspect. Myself and a radio personality friend were somewhat in the same boat in the late 90’s. No family around and pretty much everyone else we knew was working. (Las Vegas was much more an “industry town” back then and it seemed like almost everybody worked in gaming and hospitality). Palace Station was offering free champagne with their Thanksgiving buffet. I’m not much of a champagne guy, but complimentary booze was complimentary booze (especially with what I was making back then). Rest assured we put a pretty good dent in their profit/loss margin in bubbly! (Palace no longer offers this. Go figure).

Instead of a normal Newkirk’s Notes and Members Mania, I’m making the following announcement and asking for your input. In December, we’re going to debut a completely revamped newsletter. It will be better blended and better organized by topic.

We’re also going to slightly prune down the amount of information we include, which is where you come in. Las Vegas has turned into information overload. Zillions of blogs and social media accounts chasing so many tidbits of information that much of it is starting to fall in the “who cares” category.

Now… for those of you who live/eat/breath Las Vegas (you check Vegas info all day at work, then come home and spend hours more on message boards, blogs, social media, etc), more power to you. Knock yourselves out. We all need a hobby. And, I have high respect for many of my colleagues who dispense much of that information.

However, our target audience is the person who really, really wants to be informed about Las Vegas, but in reality maybe only wants to devote 30 minutes a week to it. Just the facts, just the “must know” stuff. You really don’t care if some hotel coffee shop is changing the kind of coffee they serve, and you expect us to spend the countless hours sifting through the more trivial info so you don’t have to.

Having said that, we don’t want to pare down the kind of features, articles, and links you enjoy. So, it is up to you to give us some constructive criticism and suggestions. Tell us what you like, tell us what you’d like to see changed. With just a couple of notes ahead of time:

1. Coupons have gone the way of the dodo bird. Don’t ask. Do you really want to take a $20 round-trip cab ride to save $15? Instead, we do usually publish a number of “no coupon needed” deals each week and we’ll do a better job of highlighting them for you. We get it: Deals are important!

2. Newkirk’s Notes and Members Mania will resume in full-force. However, we will be moving both of them to blog format online so that we can also invite our Twitter and Facebook fans to read and comment as well. The world is changing, and not everyone wants their info solely in newsletter form. The links to those will be highlighted in each issue.

Regarding anything else, we’re all ears! Drop us a note at [email protected] and get your two cents in before we finalize some major changes to this publication.

Just for being kind enough to give us your thoughts, we’ll put every note into a random drawing (in a couple of weeks) for something cool and unique from our closet of Vegas stuff. We get lots of limited-edition promotional items (not usually available to the public) and someone will win something cool.

Thanks for your help and Happy Thanksgiving.

Hope You Are Enjoying This Issue!

Vinnie Favorito Comedy Show by Sarah Jane Woodall

Vinnie Favorito: No Scripts, Censors, Or Sacred Cows – Just Pure Laughter – Some comedians play Vegas for years, using the same material night after night, adding a joke here and there to keep up with the news, but basically working the same stale shtick. Not so with Flamingo funnyman Vinnie Favorito!

Vinnie Favorito belongs to that special class of comic that relies on totally unscripted improvisation û so no two shows are ever the same. His material? You! In the time-honored tradition of Don Rickles, Favorito makes the audience his subject, and spends the entire hour-plus riffing on the idiosyncrasies of the crowd û to hilarious effect.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – We’ve been hard at work on a really cool new project which we’ve been wanting to do for years, and we should be able to unveil it in the next few weeks. What is it?

Our official Access Vegas “Best Of Las Vegas” readers poll. I know, I know… you are thinking “But… there are already other ‘Best Of’ polls for Las Vegas”. And yes, there are. However, we’re going to have a voting process that is extremely unique and should be a lot of fun. We’re also going to end up answering the questions regarding what the pecking order really is. Not just who is #1, but (for example) if your choice was Monte Carlo or Flamingo, who do you choose?

Our poll is not only going to be entirely software driven, but I’ll be seeing the results as we move along just like you do. No favorites, no limited choices. The only hint I’ll give you is that if you like following the playoffs for a sports league, you’ll love following the voting in our poll.

Plus, while we respect the major poll that our local paper does each year, those voters tend to be locals. If I recall correctly, Outback Steakhouse has won best steakhouse at least one year, and while there is nothing wrong with Outback, I think it is safe to say that that some of those joints serving up beef on The Strip probably are a cut above (pun intended).

The Other Side Of Downtown – Many of you are familiar with the Fremont Street Experience. Some of you may have ventured into the “Fremont East” area over to the El Cortez, and have seen first-hand all of the new business development where the canopy ends. But few visitors understand how Zappos.com leader Tony Hsieh is spending $350 million of his own cash to take what was a neglected, Downtown Las Vegas, and turn it into a vibrant business and arts community.

For those of you who may have heard the rumble, but really didn’t understand what is happening, let me suggest the pictorial article How Tony Hsieh Is Spending $350 Million In Las Vegas.

What does it mean to the regular visitor? More residents downtown, creating an artsy/techy vibe, will mean more opportunities for unique dining and drinking, a larger “downtown” area to explore, and pressure on present properties to really work hard to look good and maintain “locals friendly” pricing to attract these new downtown locals. You all know that the best deals are at the locals’ places. Think of downtown as becoming another “locals” casino and entertainment haven.

Missionaries To Las Vegas – The Evangelical Lutheran denomination has sent a 25 year old female intern pastor from her home in St. Paul, MN to spend a year at a suburban Henderson, NV church. As she is a Minnesota native, I’m sure that she’ll find Las Vegas quite a bit different from her native state (especially in the weather and scenery areas).

But interestingly enough, once you get away from the tourist areas, you really don’t see the “Sin City” that is advertised to the world. And, we have no shortage of churches or people of faith. If you pull up Las Vegas on Google Maps and typed in the word Church, you’ll see that our entire area is dotted with houses of worship: Las Vegas Area Churches

The intern in question really wants to work on the sex trafficking issue that unfortunately plagues our area, something that many area churches are actively involved in (both getting women out of sex trafficking, and showing them that they are welcome in the church). We applaud that, and hope her internship goes well. Full newspaper story: Pastor-in-training chooses Sin City church to develop her skills

But still… the concept of missionaries to Las Vegas is amusing. I guess that I forget how “Sin City” the rest of the world views us as.

Oh, The Hate! – The election is behind us. The Muslim “commie” guy from Kenya beat the wishy-washy Mormon guy who wrecked companies, leaving workers to die without health care. (Hold the emails… I’m parroting what the hardcore followers of both parties believed about their opponents). As you know, I read all the gaming business articles and blogs so you don’t have to, and I must admit surprise at the vitriol directed toward both Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson for their political stands this year.

To bring you up to speed, Wynn voted for Obama, but has spent the past year-plus criticizing the President’s policies. Adelson donated $53 million to GOP causes this election cycle, much of it in an attempt to dethrone Obama. (Adelson apparently does not like the administration’s view on Israel). By my calculations, that is .02% of Adelson’s wealth. I doubt he’s missing it. If you don’t like their politics, don’t patronize their joints. But I digress…

For years, there has been this drumbeat that Las Vegas would be a better place if the major gaming companies (the ones that own multiple casinos) broke up or sold off some of their assets. More independent owners/operators would mean more competition, looser gaming, and more deals for our visitors. (Downtown — with a number of different casino owners — seems to bear this out). Properties run by independent operators like… Wynn and Adelson (who can afford to own and operate on The Strip). Rich guys who are most likely going to vote with and support conservative causes.

How about we concentrate on doing what’s best for our visitors and quit tossing rage at casino owners and CEO’s regardless of party affiliation. I’m not overly thrilled with a number of the “top brass” at many gaming companies and the way they are running their outfits. But it has nothing to do with their politics. That hate accomplishes absolutely nothing. Our time is much better spent writing about how to improve the visitor experience.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – It is with a heavy heart that I bid adieu to summer. What a great run! Outdoor weather kicking in around mid-March and an unusually warm streak this past week keeping highs in the low-80’s F. Moving forward, we’re facing seasonable temps in the high 50’s and low 60’s. Another 2-3 weeks will probably bring the leaves falling off of the trees. I’m trading in the back patio for the front room couch and a warm space heater until March Madness rolls around.

This may sound strange, but many of the people I know, who truly love living here, prefer summer to winter. Once you make peace with the heat (and stay hydrated), it really ends up feeling preferable to chilly or cold weather. And yes, we do hit freezing overnights a few times per year.

Early Sunset- My Suggestions – With daylight savings time, it gets dark quickly here. We’re on the far eastern edge of Pacific Time and lose light earlier than what many of you may be used to. We’re in the middle of the desert at an elevation of right around 2000 feet, so once the sun goes down in the winter, it can get cold very quickly.

Right now, sunset is around 4:30 PM and will stay in that range until into January. (Our longitude and latitude result in very little change the sun sets from mid-November to mid-January). If you are headed out for the afternoon and have a bit of a hike back to your hotel before dinner, keep the dropping, post-sunset temperatures in mind when you set out.

On the flip side, a great activity this time of year is watching the sun set from atop the Stratosphere Tower. Make sure you are up there by 4 PM. Have a cocktail (or three) while watching both The Strip light up and the sun set over our jagged western mountains. The view is always spectacular, especially for those from areas of more sedate scenery). Then, since you are already halfway there, head downtown for dinner and more fun!

High Roller vs. The Neighbors – A recent local news story, Top 8 Tallest Structures in Las Vegas Valley, was an interesting read in light of the “High Roller” observation wheel under construction behind Imperial Palace and The Flamingo as part of Project Linq.

All-in-all, the following hotels are taller than the High Roller: Palazzo, Encore, Trump, Wynn, Cosmo, Aria and Elara (PH Westgate). This could be an advantage or disadvantage over time.

The views from the observation wheel may seem somewhat boxed in looking along The Strip. But, many staying on the upper floors of the hotels in question will have a great view of the wheel. This may prompt them to explore project Linq, look at the wheel, and perhaps take a ride. I guess we’ll know how it all plays out in a year (or so)! From the way things are looking, expect Project Linq to be Fremont Street Experience for hipsters. They make no bones about the fact that they are targeting a younger crowd.

The “Train To Somewhere” On Track Or Delayed? – We’ve reported extensively on the “Train To Nowhere” (a high speed rail line running from Las Vegas to either Victorville, CA or Palmdale, CA with hopeful connections into Los Angeles). We’ve also covered the X Train, which would use conventional rail lines already in place for a five hour journey where you could drink, dine, lounge, watch sports or just rest up on the trip.

X Train promoters had originally planned to have it operative last year, but are now gunning for 2013. They seemed to have acquired, or are in the process of acquiring (details are fuzzy), passenger cars, They are working with Amtrak — who will operate the train — to get the rights to run over the existing freight rails (which are controlled by two different rail lines).

An interesting twist to this story: You’d think that powerful, Nevada Senator, Harry Ried (D-NV) would get behind this, get Amtrak involved, and one way or the other, provide this added way to get people from the CA to the LV. Good for tourism, right?

Actually, Ried is neck-deep into support of the high-speed train to wherever (it ends up going to), and highly unlikely to put his support behind a viable alternative using existing infrastructure. In related news, Greyhoud Bus Lines (whom I worked for as a baggage handler during my college years) has announced non-stop Las Vegas – Los Angeles service featuring reserved leather seats, power outlets, and Wi-Fi at a price 1/2 to 1/3 what X Train is planning to charge.

Having said that, there is no travel like train travel. Roomy seats, ample opportunity to stretch your legs, and the ability to kick back and eat and drink, etc. I might take the trip just for the ride. We’ll continue to keep you up-to-date.

What We’re Watching – Vegas Videos You’ll Enjoy

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

We are coming to Las Vegas for Christmas (can’t wait – love Vegas at Christmas AND have tickets for Celine Dion’s new show!!), and just wondered how things are going with the taxis, now the new airport terminal is up and running? Is there still a problem with long-hauling or have things improved? We have been subject to this a few times and it is very annoying (after a long flight especially).

Thanks for all the Vegas info – very much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Heather

Ted Responds:

For all my moaning about our weather, I’m sure you’ll enjoy (what should be) plenty of sun and highs in the 50’s F around Christmas and have an fun time. You should really enjoy Celine, she continues to put on a great performance.

There are still isolated complaints about the wait times at customs, especially on Thursday and Sunday. However, the experience of the new Terminal 3 (T3) is night and day compared to the old one, all the way around. You’ll really be impressed.

Yes, the cab drivers are still evil people. Long-hauling, badgering for tips, acting like they know far more than they do (you really think that after their 12 hour shifts, they go party on The Strip?), and trying to get people to go to strip clubs that give them huge kick-backs. Now, they are lying to people using the new terminal and telling you that the freeway is quicker from that location.

The truth? T3 to Mirage via Paradise Road is 4 miles even. Via the tunnel? 8.4 miles. I’m not kidding. Check out the tunnel route on Google Maps and you can see how ridiculous it is! Simply inform the cab driver that you want 1. The shortest route 2. On surface streets. Cabbies are a necessary evil (I use them myself from time-to-time), but just be firm with them if they are trying to do a no-no.

X Burlesque by Guy Chapman

X Burlesque – The Nights Remain Hot At The Flamingo – Las Vegas is known for having some of the most beautiful women in entertainment. From dance, to performance, to something a little more sensual and exotic, there is always something to see on stage. There is one show on the Strip that combines all of these elements into one package, providing a new and exciting experience for every nightly audience. Celebrating its 10th anniversary on the Strip this year, X Burlesque at the Flamingo Las Vegas brings performances that will leave very little to the imagination (or perhaps create more). X Burlesque is very much an ôadultö oriented show, as it is a topless revue. The women that come out to entertain for the evening are nothing short of gorgeous, and definitely put on a show that is very diverse and exciting.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – Usually this is where I’d tell you how we’re getting temps near 80 F and perfect evenings and how you should be here. (All of which is true). However, in light of recent U.S. weather events, it is a little harder to enjoy our good fortune.

Our hearts go out to the tens of millions affected by hurricane Sandy to varying degrees. We not only saw the destruction on TV, but as of this publication date, it appears somewhere upwards of 10 million people are still without power across the Northeast United States. No heat, no ability to keep food refrigerated… I can only imagine how tough it is some areas. We hope things get back to normal for as many as possible, as soon as possible.

coco austin peepshow las vegasThe Latest Bo Peep – Coco Austin, wife of rapper and actor Ice-T, has unveiled her look in the now famous Bo Peep outfit she’ll be donning starting December 3 in the long-running hit Las Vegas show Peepshow. She follows in the footsteps of actress Kelly Monaco, former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Broadway’s Shoshana Bean, singer Aubrey O’Day, “Girl Next Door” (and mom-to-be) Holly Madison, and Holly’s understudy Angel Porrino. Word is that her performance in Peepshow will play a role in her hit reality series Ice Loves Coco.

In the meantime, Angel Porrino will fill in because of Holly’s early departure due to pregnancy. Honestly, if you are coming to town this month, you’ve got no excuse NOT to see Peepshow. Angel does a great job, singer extraordinaire Josh Strickland continues his role, and tickets through December 2 are 1/2 off if you click on the Peepshow graphic on the right sidebar of the newsletter or here: Peepshow Las Vegas Tickets.

Rhumbar Fall Cocktails – Rhumbar at The Mirage (a personal favorite of ours, seen above) has added a couple of fall cocktails: Apple Cobbler and Pumpkin Spike Martini. Each at $12, and this is a steal for craft cocktails with the strip side view.

If you can’t make it to Las Vegas, give them a try on your back porch on a crisp fall day!

Apple Cobbler:

4 apple cubes
1 oz simple syrup
1 oz lime juice
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 oz Pyrat XO Reserve Rum
Splash of Sprite

Muddle apples and simple syrup. Combine lime juice and rum. Shake and strain, then pour over ice in a double rocks glass. Add Sprite and garnish with apple slice.

Pumpkin Spice Martini:

2 oz Montecristo Spiced Rum
2 oz oven roasted pumpkin puree
1 oz Molasses
¥ cup orange juice
Pinch of all spice

No Kaboom Yet – Legal wrangling and arguments about more testing still plague the shuttered (and never completed) Harmon Tower (better known as the big billboard between Cosmopolitan and Crystals). I still believe we’ll see it imploded, but don’t hold your breath for it to happen for many, many months.

It’s A Wrap – The stalled Echelon project across from Wynn/Encore is going to at least get some beautification so that it quits looking like such an eyesore. A “wrap” of the building is planned (the same kind they put on a Las Vegas hotel that displays an ad on the side, or in this case most likely more similar to the wrap on the unfinished part of Palazzo which makes it at least look completed). They also plan some landscaping, which should make the general view in the area a little nicer.

Absolutely no plans are in the works to start reconstruction, the county has given them a 6 year extension, and my bet is that “when hell freezes over” may even be a better target date. I truly and simply don’t see Echelon (as it was planned with three hotel towers and thousands of rooms) being viable perhaps ever. The Strip can only absorb so many luxury rooms.

OneRepublic performs at the D Las Vegas

The D’s New Look – The D (formerly Fitzgerald’s downtown) is alive, well, and looking very impressive both inside and out (including the new rooms, which we gave you a sneak peek at a few weeks ago). If you have not yet been downtown, here’s a good look at the nightime facade from a couple weeks ago during an outdoor concert by band One Republic.

Downtown and Fremont Street are attracting 17 million visitors per year, which is the same amount as Disneyland and nearly 1/2 the entire total of visitors Las Vegas (as a whole) captures each year. I admit to getting a bit of a chuckle as some downtown naysayers as recently as this spring were downplaying downtown and commenting that the plans for the Fitzgerald remodel were all-but-irrelevant. He who laughs last…

Don’t bet against downtown. With the Lady Luck coming back to life next year, Fremont Street is becoming a “must do” on Vegas trips.

Speaking of… in our What We’re Watching segment, we feature Episode #1 of FSE Live, a bi-weekly show shot live on Fremont Street featuring the people and excitement that make downtown amazing. If you are in bad need of a Vegas fix, make sure you click to watch it.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I travel to Vegas 1-2 times a year but this will be my first time for Thanksgiving. I’ve already booked 4 nights at the Tropicana for $160 so our lodgings are set. I know that several restaurants, shows etc.. have Thanksgiving specials & I was wondering if anything has been announced yet?

You guys always seem to have information even before the direct websites. This will be my sister’s second visit and I want to get as much bang for our buck as possible.

Thanks you in advance,

S Watson from Cleveland

Ted Responds:

We always put out information for holidays and special events the minute we get them. In the top area of the newsletter, we have the links (when available) to information pertaining to these dates and Thanksgiving announcements have started coming in.

We do wish we had even more information to get out weeks (and months) ahead of events and holidays. I know that many of you plan your trips months in advance and it would be helpful. However, we can only move information along to you when we get it and for some reason, the hotels (and restaurants) simply don’t seem to plan special events very far out. Although, we’ve noticed that they are improving.

As a rule of thumb, every Las Vegas hotel restaurant including the buffets have a special Thanksgiving menu and (in addition to their regular fare). It is a popular four-day weekend here as many far-flung families gather. They can enjoy the company of each other, but also with something for just about everybody to do during the non-family times.

One word of caution: Lines can be LONG for restaurants on Thanksgiving Day. If you are going to a sit-down restaurant that takes reservations, make them ahead of time. If doing a buffet, put it off until later in the day for the least wait time.

Hi Ted!

We just got back from a 4 day trip to Vegas and had a great time! We stayed on Fremont St. at the D, and it was a great experience. The room was nice with a great view. The people were very nice. The price was right too! I’ll stay there again!

We didn’t even bother going to the Strip. All in all, it was great experience.

Love your newsletter and all of the info that you give!

Mary

Hi Ted,

Just got back from my annual trip. Lost a lot, but had a blast. Enjoyed zip line at Bootleg Canyon. Flew Southwest airlines, good experience. Pay the extra $10 for the early boarding.

Enjoyed Fremont St the best. Slots paid better. Two great buffets, M casino and Green Valley. Disapointed that fish tanks seen on Tanked have been removed from a few locations.

Can’t wait till next year.

Gary from Ingleside, Illinois

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the great reports, not much to add to that. People are loving downtown!

So what’s with all the grammatical errors in this week’s newsletter? Do you need to hire a new proofreader?

A couple of weeks ago, we had an unproofed newsletter get posted. Fortunately, we were able to make some corrections and repost is, so many never saw them. It happens from time-to-time.

As many of you know, we’re not published by one of the local newspapers or a major travel company. We’re not journalists nor have fancy writing degrees. Las Vegas Show Reviews

Rod Stewart by Sarah Jane Woodall

Young At Heart With Energy To Spare, Rod Stewart’s Performance Doesn’t Disappoint – Vegas once had a reputation as the place where popular entertainers go to die – the stereotype of the fat, faded star languishing in a leisure suit, warbling golden oldies in a lounge was sadly appropriate as little as ten years ago. The town has since gone through something of a rebirth, with currently popular acts making regular stops here – though we still get our fair share of the classics. Rod Stewart is one of these regularly appearing classic rock idols – but his show is about as far from the leisure suit/lounge shtick as you can get.

Kevin Burke: Mind Blowing Comedy by Terri D’Richards

Kevin Burke: Mind-Blowing Comedy Brings Hilarity To Hooters – Armed with a deck of cards, a sharp wit and a staple gun, Kevin Burke wages war on generic comedy show formats, creating his own unique hybrid style by reaching into a large bag of comedic/clairvoyant tricks in order to amuse on more than one level. The self-declared “world’s only psychic comedian” makes good use of an intimate venue, interacting with his audience and keeping the proceedings casual. His relaxed demeanor belies an ambitious schedule, performing “Mind Blowing Comedy” at Hooters Hotel Casino, as well as starring in the solo comedy Defending the Caveman on the Strip at Harrah’s.

George Wallace by Guy Chapman

George Wallace – Pure Comedy Plus Topical Content Makes You “Be Thinkin’ “ – George Wallace has long been known as ôMr. Las Vegasö, as his comedy act has graced the Las Vegas Strip since 2004. Headlining at the Flamingo Resort and Casino, Wallace has delighted packed houses full of fans every night with his interactive audience banter and real world observations. It is for this reason that showgoers will be guaranteed an entertaining and full evening of insightful humor that only ôThe George Wallace Showö can deliver. The pre-show begins inside the spacious Flamingo showroom with a number of clips from WallaceÆs television appearances that help to set the overall tone for the show.

Vegas! The Show by DW Grant

Vegas! The Show! – Step Back In Time To Real Entertainment – From the Neon Grave Yard to The Copa Room to The Planet Hollywood, Vegas! The Show delivers Las Vegas the way it should be.

Vegas! The Show begins appropriately in the Neon Grave Yard and is introduced by Ernie, the janitor, played by the musicalÆs best performer, Eric Jordan Young, rightly called by the critics ôa one man force of natureö and an ôoutsized talent.ö He is definitely more than a force and has the talent to carry this show to its conclusion.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Compublisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – We’re continuing to bask in ouráIndian Summer although next week we return to our seasonable 70’s with overnights in the 50’s. For many of you from cool weather places, it will feel great. If you are from a warm weather spot and your blood is still a little thin (like mine), long pants and even a light jacket might not be bad to pack for the night.

Two Wheels Battle On – Both the “High Roller and “Sky Vue” observation wheels claim to be moving forward with construction. This among various rumors and questions to the contrary (more so with the Sky Vue). Right now, there isn’t much to look at on either project, but both are saying that construction on key components is underway at spots around the US and around the world. We’ll keep you in the loop, although don’t hold your breath. Completion for both appears to be a good year away.

Sports Bettors, Listen Up! – Our friends at the Vegas Video Network have launched the show “The Odds Couple” airing live at Noon Pacific time on Fridays and then available on demand. Hosted by professional sports bettor Scott Pritchard and headlining comedian Anthony Padilla, this is NOT your typical “give us $50 for our pick of the week” show.

Both are funny guys, but serious about sports, the show originates just steps from the Las Vegas Strip, these guys really do bet the games, and there is no charge to enjoy the show.áCatch it live at noon (Pacific Time) on Vegas Video Network or on-demand at The Odds Couple

Wayne Newton Project Dead – Finger pointing and intensive legal wrangling has forced the attempt to turn Wayne Newton’s Casa de Shenendoah into a “Western Gracelend” where visitors can tour the historic house and ranch into a dead end. Full details at Entity that purchased Wayne Newton’s property placed in bankruptcy

Flamingo Wildlife Habitat Bird Killing – Earlier in this issue, we noted (with photo) how The Flamingo had adopted two rescue birds and how the habitat had been recently upgraded. Unfortunately, this was followed by some very unfortunate news. Two college students visiting the habitatáallegedly went after an exotic African guineafowl, beheaded it, and tossed it around like a frisbee.

We posted this both on our Twitter and Facebook pages and I think this Facebook comment response from one of our readers T J Mecomber Russi summed it up best:

Honestly I hope they fry the little bastards. These are the kind of people who become serial killers. No wonder they’re going to law school, trying to figure out how to get away with it no doubt. Perhaps with a felony conviction they can explain to their families why the phrase “do you want fries with that” is going to become so important to their futures.

Vegas For (Marital) Cheaters – An adult dating site (which we won’t bother to give publicity to) polled their members and found out that over half of them had cheated in a Las Vegas hotel. They claimed that Las Vegas is economically dependent on suffering marriages and are happy to overlook infidelity. Really? Like no one has ever cheated in any hotel anywhere else?

No question Las Vegas is a great place for romance (and to rekindle one if things are lagging). However, I’ve pretty much had it with people and companies trying to connect themselves with our fair city just to make a splash. I’m sure that if you want to have an illicit tryst, you’ll have no shortage of hotels just about everywhere looking to take your business. Speaking of romance…

12-12-12 Looking To Be Hot Wedding Day – Never one to miss a marketing opportunity, Las Vegas wedding chapels are going nuts with bookings for December 12, 2012. This will be the final of 12 years of this type of number sequence this century (started with January 1, 2001 — 01-01-01). If you or someone you know is thinking about taking the “leap of love in Las Vegas” before the end of this year, book soon. Starting next year, you’ll have to stick to those “mundane” popular wedding days such as New Years Eve, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.

Members Mania – I believe we’re finally going to bring Members Mania (reader questions and comments) back next issue. I’ve been dealing with getting projects rolling that have their genesis (of the ideas) dating back to the mid-2000’s and we’re finally in a position to move so many things forward. Everything takes time, and we’re a small, independent company. Only so many hours in the day to do so much.

Hope You Are Enjoying This Issue!

The Rat Pack Is Back by Sarah Jane Woodall

The Rat Pack Is Back, Swinging Live In Las Vegas! – Vintage Vegas has never been hotter – the days of swanky lounges, classic cocktails and sharply tailored tuxedos are back en vogue, thanks to shows like Mad Men and the resurgence of mid-century modern style. And what better ambassadors could old-school Vegas have than those iconic bad boys of yesteryear… the Rat Pack?

Mac King Comedy Magic by DW Grant

Mac King Comedy Magic – King of the Afternoon – If I had a little brother who was a magician, he would be Mac King. Clever, silly, a bit naughty and annoying, but totally loveable and entertaining, this is the man (boy) I laughed and cheered for in Harrah’s show room this afternoon. Maybe that’s why he’s called “The King of the Afternoon” and why his show is rated one of the 7 best in Las Vegas.

His gift shop offers a “Lunch Box O’ Magic,” so you know he’s not Criss Angel, and there’s plaid fabric everywhere, on his posters, on stage, and on his double breasted suit, so you know he’s not going to be the regal Lance Burton.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – A cloudy, rainy, 65-degrees-for-a-high Las Vegas as a cold snap plows through our little plot of high-desert paradise. If you are visiting soon, have no fear. Next week, we bounce back into slightly unseasonable highs in the 80’s. However, we are bidding a tearful farewell to summer soon as November days barely make it into the upper 60’s (on average) and our December average is 57. Fortunately, just about every day is sunny, so even the cooler days feel pretty good when you are out and about in the daytime!

Blue Man Group skydiving

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s… Very Blue! – We’re super-happy to have Blue Man Group back as a sponsor, and they are super-happy to be at the Monte Carlo, where they’ve built a “must see” theatre customized just the way they wanted it. Very flashy and… blue. Even if you’ve seen them before, you’ll want to strongly consider seeing this new version in the new venue.

The day of their first Monte Carlo performance, they joined the Red Bull skydivers and jumped out of a perfectly good airplane high above the Las Vegas Strip, nailing the landing right at Monte Carlo. We’ll have video of this amazing jump for you next week.

the D neon sign

Getting All Of The F’s Out – Wednesday, we joined some of our media colleagues for a personal tour of the new D Casino & Hotel from owner Derek (who often goes by simply “D”) Stevens, the proud papa of this $15 makeover of what was formerly Fitzgeralds.

One of the first things Derek noted before the tour got underway was that he couldn’t believe how many “F’s” (for Fitzgerald’s) were all over the casino and had to be removed! (The name Fitzgerald’s was only licensed to the property, and since the Las Vegas hotel had no relation to other Fitzgerald’s around the country, they wanted a clean break)

Plenty of general news coverage exists (some of which we’ll be linking to next week), and we’ve covered the renovation news on a regular basis (including being the first ones to tell the public of the concept of a party casino downstairs and retro casino upstairs). So, just some thoughts and notes:

  • The outside of the hotel is by far the most modern, sleek looking of any downtown. Thousands of LED lights and a whole bunch (easily 50, probably more) plasma TV screens make an unending array of patters across the entire facade. Former Cirque du Soleil guru Roger Perry was involved in the design. (We’ll be getting night photos of it to share with you soon).

Dancing bar girl

  • If the above bar and dancing bartenders look familiar, the idea was “stolen” from sister-property Golden Gate. Except that this bar is twice as big, with one end featuring the dancers and a myriad of frozen cocktail flavors, and the other end showcasing flair bartenders who will pour you some serious spirits.

coin operated slot machine

  • The conversion of the downstairs casino was done first, and immediately both crowds and energy went through the roof. Upstairs, improvements were nice but reasonably nominal and they have left most of the old-school (including many coin operated — pictured above) games on the floor. We’re already reported (and were the first with pics) of the Sigma Derby game they salvaged from the old Frontier hotel, and it is a runaway hit.

Stevens describes — in musical terms — the downstairs as more “Black-Eyed Peas” and the upstairs as more “Frank Sinatra”. IE, downstairs is modern party music and upstairs you’ll hear hits from decades gone by (generally 60’s and 70’s). So, for all of you who chronically complain that Vegas is only for the young and rich, get your butt to The D upstairs.

the D king-bed room

  • Made In The USA: The D is very pro-American manufacturing (their car giveaways will only feature domestic brands) and were extremely proud of the fact that all of the furniture used in the remodel of the rooms and suites was made in the U.S.A. Standard room pictured above.

Coney Island

  • American Coney Island Chilly Dogs, a 95 year old company that holds a respectable claim to the invention of the Coney Island Hot Dog, has opened their first non-Michigan location at the property. They also feature a small selection of meal-type salads and gyros and figure to do well as a quick food pit-stop right on Fremont Street (under the new escalator leading up to Vue Bar and the Vintage Casino).

the D escalator

  • Change I don’t like: The Vue Bar upstairs used to have tables and chairs, and cocktail service so you could enjoy a drink sitting down overlooking Fremont Street. I noticed that the tables and chairs were gone, and pressed Derek on this very popular issue. I was left with the impression that they weren’t planning to replace them, but might revisit the idea.
  • Easter Egg: Those of you who play computer games may be familiar with this term. It is a special, unadvertised surprise. For example, go down a hidden hall, turn a certain way, touch a wall in a special place, and an unknown part of the game opens up.

The D has its own Easter egg, and one you have to be looking for. As you ascend the escalator to the second floor, your natural inclination will be to look down out at Fremont Street. Instead, stand on the right side of the escalator and look at the plasma screens directly in front of you. As you pass many of the screens, you’ll be surprised by the people you “meet”. That’s all we’re going to say. You’ll have to try this one out for yourself!

The Mentalist by Guy Chapman

The Mentalist – An Enjoyable Night Out Leaving Your Mind Amazed – While there is always something to see in the Las Vegas StripÆs entertainment scene, it does become difficult at times to find something past all the showgirls and elaborate stage productions. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – Over they years of doing this, I’ve had nightmares that we’d have a week with little-to-no news. Obviously, those fears have been vastly unfounded. As always, we’re presenting a packed issue with the Vegas news that you really care about!

Doogie Howser Neil Patrick Harris hosted with performances by Jennifer Hudson, Willie Nelson, Carole King, Emmylou Harris, Joshua Bell, Martina McBride, Arturo Sandoval, John Fogerty, and others.

This is not some “Las Vegas Strip” extravaganza like you are used to seeing on TV. Strictly a performing arts setting where the important people in town enjoyed that we now have “culture”. Check your local PBS listings over the next few weeks to find when it is playing in your area. Speaking of…

“Vegas” Of To A Good Start – The new Dennis Quaid CBS TV crime Drama Vegas trounced the competition in its time slot this past week. (If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, we reminded you a day before it aired). Part old Vegas, part crime drama, and part “modern” western, the show takes you back to the days when Las Vegas really was more of a cowboy town and Fremont Street ruled. Vegas continues weekly on Tuesday nights, check your local listings.

Get Your “D” On Soon! – On one of our regular sojourns downtown to stagger from East Fremont to The Plaza combine enjoying Vegas with getting some exercise in, we were pleased to see The D construction moving towards completion. With the dearth of resort construction going on here in our fair neck-of-the-woods, all eyes have been on the upgrades taking Fitzgerald’s and turning it into The D. I’ll tell you right now that the downstairs improvements (Longbar and a new pleasure pit) have really brought the aging property back to life.

We snuck an exclusive photo of the (obviously under construction) outside bar which — while similar to the one at sister-property Golden Gate — looks to be much larger (we barely got half of it in the shot) and will surely do good business both with passer-bye and those watching the free live bands which play nightly on the adjacent 3’rd Street Stage.

The tall black bars on the wall are actually flat-screen video monitors, and we’re guessing they’ll display various graphics and colors to make interesting designs.

In an effort to draw crowds up to the second floor casino (a rarity in the gaming industry), a “first of its kind” (for downtown) outdoor escalator is going to whisk people directly up to the Vue Bar and into the casino. For those who aren’t into thumping music and “pleasure pit” gambling, you’ll be happy to know that the second floor is old school. Classic hits music and traditional/retro slot machines, some of which even take coins! We’re hoping that they don’t screw with the high-payback video poker at Vue Bar.

Monorail Not Dead Yet – The people running the monorail are attempting to seriously revive the notion of running it over to the airport. Fresh out of bankruptcy reorganization, the monorail is now only carrying $13 million in debt (down from the $757 million they owed). However, investors don’t appear the want to take another haircut and the only funding in sight for the beleaguered ride is the hope of federal funding (your tax money, thank you very much).

Monorail officials are citing the eventual re-opening of The Sahara (no date set) and the 2013 opening of Project Linq, and also talking about building a stop to serve Venetian/Palazzo/Sands Convention center. Personally, I think they are being a little over-optimistic about the number of people who are going to make Linq a “ride the monorail to” destination stop. However, the combination of all of the above won’t hurt.

Word is that to get some federal funding, the ride would have to be taken over by a government agency (whom I imagine couldn’t do much worse). The same guy has been running it for years, reportedly making a nice $300k+ income all the while ridership has dropped year after year.

They would probably have to secure the government funding before Harry Ried were to perhaps retire or be voted out of office. However, Ried is pretty much up to his neck in the funding for the “train to nowhere” (high speed train from Las Vegas to Victorville). No indication whether he’d want to take this one on as well.

Also, the fight with the cab companies would be legendary. Even though it appears like Las Vegas is served by many taxi services, they are all owned by a very small number of actual cab companies, which wield immense amounts of political power.

Steve Wynn vs. Joe Francis Defamation Lawsuit – – Some of you have been keeping up on this action where Wynn/Encore owner Steve Wynn went after the infamous Girl’s Gone Wild founder Joe Francis after Francis (basically) said that Wynn was mobbed up and might kill Francis over a $2 million gambling debt. Wynn won, and Francis is appealing the verdict.

Our friend Tony Snyder — a practicing attorney in the state of Michigan — wrote a great article examining the case in layman’s terms and is a must-read for anyone who has heard about the case. Read: Defamation of Steve Wynn

Las Vegas Show Reviews

Legends In Concert by Sarah Jane Woodall

Six Nights A Week, You Can Still See The Big Names In Vegas – At some point in their careers, all the big names come through Vegas – Cher, Aretha, Tom Jones… and of course, Sinatra. You can still catch some of these headliners if you happen to be in town on the right weekend… but what about those acts that, like Elvis, have already “left the building?” It’s too late to see them, right?

Wrong! Six nights a week at Harrah’s, you can still experience the majesty of Elvis in his glory days… as well as witness the magic of Michael Jackson, the fireball that is Tina Turner, and the provocative teasing of Madonna – all in the same room!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Well, the days are already getting shorter, with sunset clocking on about 6:45 PM. We sit on the very edge of Pacific time (Boise, ID in Mountain Time is actually west of us) which gives us one of the few drawbacks of living here — the early sunset. On the flip side, shorter days have brought and end to 100 degree temps and evenings are unbelievably pleasant with shirtsleeve and shorts weather while you bask in the post-sunset neon-lit Las Vegas Strip. If you have a favorite outdoor restaurant or bar here, fall is a great time to enjoy it without melting!

This Episode Brought To You By The Letter Q – As noted earlier in the newsletter (and as we tweeted and put on Facebook and Google+ when the news broke), Caesars Entertainment (the company, not the hotel) announced that their Linq project will be fronted by the remodeled Imperial Palace and given the name “The Quad”. (Bold type is ours). Yes, we all agree. Lousy choice. In fact, this generated the most Twitter replies and re-tweets of any topic we’ve ever put out there, all of them negative.

Dictionary.com defines quad as “a quadrangle, as on a college campus”. However, I can’t think that they want to appeal to broke college kids (many of whom are not old enough to do Vegas anyway). I’ve looked over the Linq drawings and plans and perhaps where Linq will meet with Quad and Harrah’s will form some kind of quadrangle. Who knows?

With the amazing history of Las Vegas hotel names (both past and present), this is a disappointment. I’m still calling Bill’s by The Barbary Coast and (should it ever get remodeled), I don’t see how I can call The Sahara by the new proposed SLS name. What happened to names like Dunes and Stardust!

Customs Waits – Our beautiful huge new McCarran Airport Terminal 3 (T-3) has been open a couple of months now, and is a really nice change for our international guests who used to be regulated to a junky old terminal that is facing the wrecking ball. That’s the good news. The bad news? Customs waiting times have been long despite T-3 having plenty of custom lanes and the most modern technology. Why? The federal government staffs the customs lines, not the airport. You can have the best tools, but you need people to be using them.

With around 30% of our readers from outside the US, this is of key interest to us. Please send us your Las Vegas airport customs experiences to [email protected] so we can keep tabs on this issue and help make sure it is properly addressed.

Las Vegas Makes You Feel Young – We have a nice segment of senior who enjoy reading and often write about how Las Vegas makes them feel young, which is great! Many have given thought to why one seems to have extra energy while visiting. The old myth was that hotels pumped oxygen into the casino, but alas… that would be impossible. Not only are you looking at an amazing expense, but oxygen is flammable. Any fire would immediately burn with far more intensity than normal.

Certainly, many factors come into play. The synergy of so many people doing so much activity adds a buzz to the air. The fact that most are doing so much more walking than normal really gets your blood pumping. But there is an unquantified, unexplained energy that does radiate from The Strip, no doubt about it. I live just a few minutes from The Strip and I can feel it. It’s always there, radiating out. It would be interesting if there was a way to study or explain it!

Lady + Gold = Synergy? – The people rebuilding the Lady Luck (as the Downtown Grand) are taking over gaming operations at the next-door Gold Spike. A few years ago, The Spike was completely remodeled, turning it from a lovable dive (which we had a soft spot for) into a nice but pretty generic boutique hotel-casino. Downtown Grand developers are also behind the resurgence of 3rd Street (next to the Mob Museum) including numerous bars and restaurants. The entire area sits just one block off of Fremont Street and they are surely hoping to create a synergy that will get you curious enough to make the very short walk.

Vegas Video Network Surpasses 600 Live Shows – We want to congratulate our friends at the Vegas Video Network for passing the 600 show mark! We’ve been big fans from Day 1 of their great shows like Living In Las Vegas, Pub Crawl, and Talktails.

We’re super-excited to announce their latest venture, which will be a show in conjunction with the Fremont Street Experience (the official collection of downtown hotels) filmed live on and around Fremont Street.

The initial run of 10 episodes will start in October and we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop. Those of you who are having trouble getting your friends to try out (formerly) “dingy old downtown” will be able to show them all of the excitement and amazing improvements in the area.

Hope You Are Enjoying This Issue!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – If you follow any the news at all, you already know that Las Vegas got hit with torrential (that is an understatement) rain on Tuesday, September 11. Within hours, the skies were clear but the damage was done. Flooded homes, cars, and dirt/sand/gravel covering streets around the valley.

I had my own personal scare. Water was coming off my roof in sheer sheets (like a waterfall — we don’t have gutters here, and a gutter wouldn’t have held up anyway) and ponding of the water briefly came up on the back of my house a few inches. Fortunately, the rain let up just enough for it to subside before the next storm band slammed in and did it again.

All of the local news stations pretty much focused on the high water and flooding in the suburbs (locals generally don’t visit The Strip, which I’ve always found kind of strange… like living at the beach but never hitting the sand). However, we found a couple of good YouTube videos from The Strip and we’ve linked them up in the “What We’re Watching” segment.

Temps for the next 10 days are generally in the low 90’s with no rain in site. If you have a pending visit, you’ll be fine!

Many, Many, Many Thanks – A couple of months ago, we noticed that our sites were running just a little bit slow. We didn’t give it much thought at the time. Sometimes the internet is slower than others. Then… our IT guy told me that we need to upgrade to better, faster servers. I’m like “Why, what’s up… the way we’ve been doing it the past couple of years has been fine”. In fact, a couple of years ago, we upgraded to a situation that had far more capacity than we needed!

I’m going to confess something that may confound others in this field, but I don’t keep track of our traffic. We’re a small, privately held outfit. We just do what we do and let the chips fall where they may. Hence, I didn’t realize that our website traffic has been on a pretty nice rise!

So, I very much want to thank those of you who continue to tell your friends to visit AccessVegas.com — where they can subscribe to this newsletter — and for those of you who use us to help keep you informed on what’s hot and what’s new in Las Vegas by clicking on all of the informational links to stories that we provide each week.

We know that many of you are able to take advantage of direct room offers from the hotels themselves and thus can’t patronize our hotels partner (who helps support our efforts here). But, you can still tell people about our newsletter and AccessVegas.com on your favorite travel message boards, trip reports you make on those ratings sites, and similar.

For those of you yet to tell your friends… what are you waiting for?!? If they visit Las Vegas, you know that we’ll deliver the very latest, best, and most pertinent visitor information without the stuff you don’t care about. We spend countless hours sifting through Las Vegas information so you don’t have to!

holly madison peepshow las vegasLights Out For Holly – Peepshow mainstay Holly Madison — now in her fourth month of pregnancy — will make her last Peepshow appearance on October 21. Prior to Holly, the show had a somewhat rotating cash of lead females including Kelly Monaco, Melanie Brown, and Aubrey O’Day. Rumors  that Jenny McCarthy or Carmen Electra might take over the roll have been squashed.

Madison had initially been scheduled to end her run at the end of this year in order to start a family, but evidently got started a little early! The father is her boyfriend Pasquale Rotella, the CEO of Electric Daisy Carnival.

Peepshow has been a long-time sponsor of this newsletter and we hope that the show (and our advertising relationship) continues to have a great post-Holly run. But if you want to see “Holly-Peep” version of the show and you’re going to be here before October 21, Click For Peepshow Las Vegas Tickets.

Light Up Your Life With Las Vegas – You can now buy a light from the famous Las Vegas sign. The actual lights used on the sign are changed out the first Tuesday of each month, and done so sequentially. Availability permitting (first come, first served), you can buy a light related to a specific month and a specific day of that month. Which means you can get a light that was on the sign when you visited it, or simply a light that was in use on a special day in our life. Read more at Man has bright idea to sell part of Las Vegas history and you can purchase the lights at http://officiallasvegaslight.com

Don’t Hold Your Breath For Interstate 11 – For the past couple of years, I’ve been keeping you up on the move to upgrade the Phoenix to Las Vegas portion of US Highway 93 to Interstate 11. This would involve four-laning the entire route (approximately 1/4 of the stretch is still two-lane highway), brining it all up to Interstate highway standards in terms of speed and safety, and making the entire stretch “controlled access” freeway (overpasses with onramps and offramps with no roads or driveways offshooting the route).

Sounds good, right? Certainly for those of you who visit by driving in from Arizona, New Mexico and points southeast of us.

Not so fast. Although in the planning stages, the project could take up to 20 years for completion with nearly the first decade alone being devoted simply to environmental studies of the route. Now, let me be clear on something: I don’t believe in being cruel to animals. I could understand if this was a brand new highway looking to run through some kind of wildlife refuge and they want to make sure that all the animals don’t get hit by cars (which could hurt the car occupants just as much as the animals). But with the exception of a new 12 mile stretch that will bypass Boulder City, what we have here is an already established route that has been in place for many, many DECADES.

Why on earth do we need a long, expensive, costly environmental study to improve an existing road is far beyond unreasonable. For more on this story, check out Interstate 11 could become an afterthought

Putting It In Perspective – During the height of the recession when the naysayers were hoping for the death of Las Vegas (how’d that work out for them), hotel occupancy was in the upper 70’th percentile and I noted that most cities would kill for those kinds of numbers.

Case and point: Occupancy in London for the Olympic Games was right around 80%. For the Olympics! And, most U.S. cities see occupancy rates of around 55-60% regularly. By last year, room occupancy was already pushing 90% here, and we expect an even better 2012!
