October is often thought of as a magical month with Halloween. With that in mind, we are reviewing three Las Vegas magic shows this month: The Illusionary Magic of Rick Thomas, Houdini Lives Again staring Dixie Dooley, and the Steve Wyrick Magic Show.
FEATURE STORY: HOUDINI LIVES AGAIN starring DIXIE DOOLEY
In the magical world of Las Vegas, Dixie Dooley stands alone. A lifelong Houdini fan, he has devoted his life to the art of escape. To say he has mastered it is an understatement.
This show takes us back almost a century, complete with old-time carnival type music and his assistant wearing costumes from that period. He starts out with some basic card and bird tricks. Basic? Oh, we forgot to mention that he did them while handcuffed. No chance to wave one hand away from the body while the other hand hides something.
He then moved through numerous rope tricks before attempting an escape from a Shanghai Shackle — a device which confines a person from head to toe — only to have his assistant shackled in his place in a matter of seconds.
After toying with a square knot (tied by two audience members around his wrists — he was able to repeatedly get in and out of it), we were treated to the first of his two signature escapes. He was confined to a regulation straightjacket and managed to completely escape from it within 2 minute. There didn’t appear to be any “trick” here, and this struggle left him quite winded as he sat down to tell us the story of Houdini and the seances he exposed.
He moved onto an audience participation “seance” (which had much more of a humorous than a black magic twist to it) and then on to a levitation act that was one of the better I have seen. The “sleeping assistant” didn’t just move around a few inches — and it wasn’t just an “up-and-down” situation.
The finale is an escape from a German milk can filled full with 1/4 ton of water. Dixie was shackled then stepped up, took a deep breath, and slid into the milk can. The water his body displaced poured out all over. The top was secured on the can with chains and padlocks. A curtain went around the milk can and less than 2 minutes later, a dripping wet and out-of-breath Mr. Dooley appeared.
While there was no nudity, this is very much an adult show, as it is based more on awe, humor, and appreciation of the escapes than flash and dash. The shows plays at The Plaza Hotel downtown Tuesday through Sunday at 4 PM with an added 8 PM show on Sunday. Tickets are $15.95.
With the Fremont St. Experience light shows now starting at 6:00 PM, this afternoon show fits nicely into a trip downtown. You can catch Mr. Dooley, enjoy a meal, and then enjoy the light shows and the rest of downtown. You can read more about Houdini Lives Again as well other afternoon shows at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-08-Fri-1999/weekly/12084733.html and we have 2 comps to the show in our contest section.

Thanks for the input. We have not played table games at Paris and appreciate hearing about your pleasant experience. This past Sunday, we visited Venetian, Bellagio and Paris within 2 hours of each other and we personally prefer the softer-lit casinos like the Bellagio and Paris. But for those who prefer a very high ceiling and a brightly lit atmosphere, Paris is it.
