Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! O.J. is gone from town (flying commercial to Ft. Lauderdale… you can have him down there). Britney Spears is on the cover of every magazine, but old news here.

But… this is Las Vegas. Unquestionably the next big story splashed all across the magazines and news channels is just around the corner!

Las Vegas: Always Sunny and Hot? Always sunny, yes. However… things do cool down over the fall and winter months. Here are the average highs and lows through the end of the year:

  • October 81/57 F
  • November 66/44 F
  • December 57/37 F
  • January 57/37 F (not a misprint… same as December)
  • February 63/41 F
  • March 69/47 F

A strong word of warning: We are in the middle of an unpredictable desert. It can often be 10 degrees above or below the average temps, and occasional winds can make the overnight low feel colder than the average.

On the flip side, many of you would kill for a 60 degree day in the middle of winter. As fall starts to chill where you are and the cold is no longer a novelty, come spend some time with us here.

P.S. Guys, plan the trip around the weekend your team is playing a big game so you can enjoy a nice, legal bet on it! (Ladies, if you aren’t a fan, the time during the game is a great time to hit a spa or take in our famous shopping).

California Girl Brandyn Horsley Joins ‘Crazy Girls’ - New Dancer Performs In ‘Las Vegas’ Sexiest Topless Revue’ - Brandyn is a native of Huntington Beach, California and moved to Las Vegas about two years ago when I was 18 and she fell in love with dancing in “Crazy Girls” (Tickets) at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. My mom works for NEC which manages phone systems for major corporations. I’m an only child. I loved growing up a half-block from the beach. I graduated from high school at 16 and then went to college and got my real estate license. I came to Las Vegas out of boredom. I used to help my parents by doing paperwork and holding open houses. There isn’t anything near the water for less than a million dollars these days.” Click to Read The Full Story …

Hi Ted and everyone at ‘Access Vegas’,

This is the first photograph I took when I arrived in Las Vegas, it was taken just outside of the airport. It’s one of my most favourite photos and it always makes me feel good. It reminds me of the heat and excitement of my first trip to Vegas, (I’m coming back again in August).

Thanks for all the great Las Vegas info guys!

Hello,

Just wanted to say I have had a blast every time I have visited Vegas . my friends and I, love it there. I have been to Vegas 4 times since 2005 and stay somewhere different each time …

I think I now know more about Vegas than anyone who lives there . I am thinking of coming back again in September or October 2007 …..

Carolyn A. Bailey

Ted Responds:

Carolyn,,

Thanks for the great letter. Undoubtedly, most of our readers do end up knowing more about Las Vegas than most of the people living here. Even people who work on The Strip come in, work, and go to their homes miles from the action. Even the “inside” info they have is often rumor of something they heard fourth hand.

We report either through direct experience or information and reports received directly from the sources and go out of our way to forgo rumors and information not directly obtained from those in charge. In addition, everybody who works on this newsletter or our site is someone who enjoys the attractions and activities on a regular basis.

The bottom line is that we love Las Vegas, and enjoy sharing our enjoyment with everybody. We do ask all readers who appreciate this newsletter to check out our great sponsors and use our hotel, show, and ticket booking links when planning a Vegas visit. Those great sponsors help keep this newsletter well researched and free!

Hi Ted,I really enjoy the newsletter and the infrequent podcasts. The podcasts are the way I first became aware of your great insights. I hope you can keep it up.

How about giving us some advice as to where we might find some nice, quiet, cocktail lounges where we could hear some smooth jazz, a la piano bar or small combo, singer, etc. You get the idea. I’ve been coming to Vegas ever since my parents took us kids to stay at the Dunes, Riviera and Tropicana. I’m now 66 years old and I still like to visit every few months or so. But, except for the Baccarat Lounge at Bellagio, I haven’t been able to find many others. Can you help?

Keep up the good work.

David Durbin
McKinleyville, CA

Ted Responds:

David,

Podcasts will be back in a few weeks (finally), and on a regular basis. We’ve been stretched very thin with a pending upgrade (expanding into other cities, more to come on that down the road) and training new hires. The podcast is probably the most fun, but unfortunately most expendable of the things I do.

Besides the lounge you mentioned at Bellagio, Harrah’s Range Steakhouse usually does nightly. You don’t have to eat there. They have an intimate little lounge that overlooks The Strip (indoors), nice place to relax. Many events (including in tourism areas) come and go. Certain local jazz and smooth jazz artists will play a few lounge dates here and there. These events are usually noted at http://www.smoothjazz1057.com/calendar/

Hope this helps!

Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! This is an O.J. free zone. I’m amazed anyone still cares about that clown. Must be a slow news week.

Looks like we’ve seen the last of our 100 degree (F) days for the year. Sun is going down about 7 PM but still plenty of great warm days to hit the pool, but with the amazing lights of our city blazing earlier in the evening. The next couple of months will be amazing for walking The Strip with your favorite cocktail in hand.

Yes… for those of you who have yet to make your first visit: You are welcome to carry your cocktail or beer (glass, bottle, or can) anywhere in our tourism areas. However, police or security will detain you if you get out-of-hand. We have no closing time here. Every hotel has bars and gift shops selling libations 24/7. Simply pace yourself and enjoy Las Vegas. No need to slam drinks to beat “last call.” We don’t have one.

Britney Spears pretty much wrecked her chances of getting a permanent Las Vegas show. Las Vegas show productions are very expensive to produce and promote and Britney has proven herself repeatedly unreliable. Having said that, Fans who grew up with her are now old enough to come enjoy Las Vegas. Never say never.

Best Burgers In Vegas - Our area is host to outlets from three regional burger chains, all of which have a following of people will drive miles out of their way to enjoy one. I want to give you my three picks for the best burgers in Las Vegas. What do they all have in common? All three cook to order with fresh ingredients:

Third Place: In-N-Out Burger - No frills, no frozen stuff, no McFluff. The most simple menu in the world of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, their famous Double Double, basic fries, shakes and soft drinks. Closest one to The Strip is on Tropicana just across the freeway from New York, New York: 4888 Dean Martin Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89103

Second Place: Fatburger - The best “with the frills” burger. You can get hamburger, turkey burger, chicken, topped with things like bacon, an egg, chili or cheese. They have a location right on The Strip across from the Monte Carlo: 3763 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

First Place: Schoops - This is a chain familiar to those of you from the Midwest part of the U.S. The Las Vegas location is a true throwback to the burger and malt shops of the mid-1900’s. Burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes, and malts cooked to order and simply amazing. Their only location is down on the “new” South Strip, just north of the South Point hotel (look for the Stoney’s nightclub sign, then look for the antique mall to the right): 9151 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89123

Features Are Returning - We are bringing back the ever popular Reader Feedback and Readers Photos this week, and other favorite sections of this newsletter will return as fall kicks in.

Reader Submitted Photo - William Stobbs of Salisbury England. submitted this he took while in town during September 11, 2001 as the nation was still in shock and the planes had just started flying again (which was just about exactly 6 years ago as this newsletter goes out):

William sent this about three months ago with with the following note. (We held the photo until now because of the timing with the anniversary of the event):

My Wife (Doreen) and I will be returning to Las Vegas on the 20th Aug 2007 for a 14 Night Holiday staying at the Bellagio. This will be our 10th Visit The first one being in April 1998, We usually stay for 2 and sometimes 3 weeks as the flight from London is so very long and there is so many things to do in LV like visiting the Grand Canyon and rafting down the Colorado from the Dam. Just to name a couple.

We are both Senior Citizens but when we get to Vegas well feel as if we can go on for ever what with the Great weather,Great food and Great Hotels you name it and it’s in Vegas.

Thanks again, William and Doreen

Hello,

I try to be in Vegas every year on or around Halloween. Some years the hotels hold Halloween parties on the 31st but other times they hold them on the weekend before or after the actual holiday. I will once again be out there this coming October. Could you tell me what hotels will hold parties and when they are going to be held?

I enjoy Vegas and your report–Thanks

Dave

Ted Responds:

I have no clue. I suspect we’ll start letting us know in early October. As always, we post and/or link to info in the newsletter when it comes in!

This is a good time to remind our of our friends in Public Relations for the various resort properties and nightlife venues that our readers enjoy and use our newsletter to help plan their vacation in advance.

While getting info to the local media right before an event is important (to attract the locals who never venture near The Strip… co’mon), getting us the info well in advance might get the info to visitors who care!
