Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year… and I’m not talking Christmas. We men are celebrating the start of (American) Football season, unquestionably the most popular sport in the U.S. For the next four months, I’ll hear multiple excuses about why various staffers need to run errands… at right about 4 PM. (Prime Time college games start at 5 PM our time, NFL games at 6 PM). Funny… they seem to always return with a stack of sports book betting tickets!

The moms are happy the kids are back in school, and the singles are psyched about the opening of clubs Blush (Wynn Las Vegas) and LAX (Luxor). BTW… we can hook you up with VIP passes and table/bottle reservations at 800-696-5721.

VMA’s and AVP - Combine to make the biggest weekend in a long, long time this coming Sept. 6-9, 2007. The MTV Music Awards air live from The Palms on Sunday Sept. 9 at 9 PM Eastern. A few premium tickets are available but you better have one fat wallet to see this history-making Las Vegas event in person.

AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour is live from Caesars Palace on the 6′th - 8′th (Tickets). Finals are televised on the 8′th on MyNetworkTV (check local listings) This is of special interest to us: The Gods and Goddess’ Tourney contest. Our good friend and business associate Harley Van Hyning won the Atlanta God of the Beach contest and is in the town for the festivities and finals.

Harley is currently best known for his DestinFloridaPodcast.com, which is well worth a listen for our friends from the south and Midwest who enjoy visiting Destin and Panama City Beach, Florida. He’ll also be doing some reporting for us here over the weekend on the recent opening of Blush Nightclub and other nightlife activities.

Features Will Return - Many of your favorite features like the photos of the week, reader questions, gambling tips, and reader submitted photos will return in September. Still plenty of news and information this week.

Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! The cab drivers are up to their usual garbage… resisting more cabs on the street while they basically ignore most of the city, run visitors the long way, and hustle to get people to certain adult establishments that give them huge kickbacks.

If you are a newer reader, this is good stuff to know. If you’ve been following this over the years, this will get you up-to-date.

More Crap from Las Vegas Cabbies - The secret has been out for quite some time now about Las Vegas cabbies. Our reports, newspaper reports, and even on cable TV travel specials warn about the tricks and stunts cab drivers pull on you. We’ve been reporting on it for years.

So… a couple of recent local news stories caught my attention:

First of all… DUH. Of course you are skipping the cab lines at McCarran. You don’t want to wait outside in a big line (common during peak periods). You don’t want a cabbie taking you the long way (through the airport tunnel) to run up the meter. You don’t want to cabbie trying to sell you tickets for crap you aren’t interested in, nor giving you worthless advice on stuff they know little-to-nothing about. Just hoping that being “helpful” will net him a bigger tip. (Co’mon… you think that after their shift, cab drivers head out and hit every attraction on The Strip? They can’t wait to get to their suburban homes far away from their work environment).

In addition, getting a cab outside the tourism areas of Las Vegas is pretty much a very bad joke. Cabbies all want to be running people from hotel-to-hotel. Short rides, big tips. If you want to venture to an off-strip attraction or destination, good luck on getting a cab back. You’ll find out what locals have always known: Cab service outside the tourism core is almost impossible to get. (Locals who fly often know that if they call for a cab to get them from their house to the airport, they might as well kiss their flight goodbye).

Now, cabbies are complaining about the move to put more cabs on the street. Despite the fact that you often stand in long cab lines at the airport, and often can’t get a return cab if visiting an off-strip attraction (putting aside what us locals go through if we need one).

Hello Cabbies: No wonder fewer people are taking cabs at the airport. If only one or two in a party, much better, quicker, and cheaper to take one of the many airport shuttles. If a number of people in your party (or if you just want to travel in style), you can often get a town car or limo from the airport for not much more than a cab ride (especially when you factor in the long routes that many of them still use). I say this from experience: Many of our staff often use the tunnel that runs south of the airport, under the airport. We almost always see cabs full of (what is clearly) tourists. Guess what… The Strip is NORTH of the airport, not south of it.

Message to Visitors: Use shuttles or limos, and don’t expect to get a cab back to your hotel if you venture away from The Strip. Do expect for a cabbie to feed you lines of crap about stuff, just trying to get a bigger tip for being “informed” (ya… right). Note to Locals: You already know not to try to get a cab to come and take you anywhere. Perhaps it is time to support the efforts to put more cabs on the street. Between wait lines at the airport, and the inability to get timely cab service anywhere in town… it sounds like we need a LOT more cabs on the streets of Las Vegas.

Health District Prepares To Issue Smoking Citations - After nearly eight months, health authorities are taking off the gloves in the fight over Nevada’s smoking ban. Since December, the Southern Nevada Health District has been trying to figure out how to enforce the ban around Las Vegas. They started by trying to get bars and restaurants on their side. But now they say that has not worked well enough, so it is time to go after the smokers themselves. If you are a smoker, the fines could be a real drag. Smokers who light up in restaurants or other locations could face a $100 fine. The health district says the time has come to target smokers, and not just the places they light up. Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Wow… what a great summer! We’ve had average temps (104 F) with only a couple of exceptions: An early summer week of 112-115 and a more recent week of monsoon storms with rain and humidity. But nothing last year where the overnight low didn’t dip below 90 on a couple of occasions.

Pardon Our Major Dust - We are phasing in a major upgrade to AccessVegas.com. This has been a year in the works, and we are talking into account the significant amount of your comments and suggestions. Do you ever feel that every travel site almost seems the same? We agree… we do too. Granted, we are very proud of this newsletter which was ground-breaking at the time, and continues to give Las Vegas visitors access to more of the important information every week they they will find in most any similar publication.

However, what others do simply isn’t good enough for us. We want to make both AccessVegas.com and our newsletter more fun, more interactive, and even more helpful. So… over the next 6-8 weeks we will be phasing in a new, more clean look to the site with many amazing new fun and helpful features.

We do ask for your patience: Just as many of the incredible hotel casino resorts here close off a section of the property for a brief time while they build new improvements, various areas of AccessVegas.com might not be available for short periods during this upgrade and expansion. Rest assured that all bookings and all our travel partners are up and operating 100% with no issues whatsoever. But certain sections like our famous free Las Vegas Computer Wallpaper gallery and a few other sections may not be open during this transition.

Hang with us… we are sure you will absolutely love the improvements that we bring online. While you are at it, why not tell a couple of friends about us? Send them to our Las Vegas Insider Vibe newsletter site where they can sign up to get this world-renowned newsletter and enjoy the information in our back issues!

Elvis Lives - On the 30′th anniversary of the death of The King, we want to give a huge tip of the hat to amazing Las Vegas based Elvis tribute artist Trent Carlini. I first saw him years ago at the (now imploded) Boardwalk on The Strip. (The Boardwalk was just north of the Monte Carlo, where MGM CityCenter is going in). He put on an amazing show and he now plays at The Sahara.

Many feel he is the absolute best Elvis impressionist out there, and that was validated when he won ABC Television’s Next Big Thing. He’s well worth checking out if your next visit is coming up. Even if we aren’t seeing you here anytime soon, I’m also including links go Trent Carlini audio and video for you to enjoy!

PS: A few of the great features often included in this newsletter will be absent for a couple more issues while we go through this transition. However… now is a great time to enjoy the archives including our Las Vegas Photos Gallery and our Newsletter Archives.
