Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Our thanks to reader Mike Jauken who found the source of the “hit you three ways” quote in our last issue. It was part of a routine by Christian comedian Mike Warnke during the 70’s.

Mamma Mia! Celebrates Four Years - A big congratulation to Mamma Mia! on four successful years in Las Vegas. Many shows have come and gone during that time, and Mamma Mia continues to draw rave reviews. In celebration, we have added some new Mamma Mia photos to our online photo gallery this week. We want to celebrate and hook you up: Save $30 right now on Mamma Mia tickets!

St. Patrick’s Day and March Madness - start at the same time on March 15-18 with St. Patrick’s day on Saturday March 17, 2007!

Combined with some spring break dates around the country, this is already shaping up to be one of the big-time fun weekends of the year. Check your schedule, put in for the time off, get a friend who will call you in sick… whatever it takes. NASCAR UAW Daimler-Chrysler 400 - The March 11, 2007 Las Veags race is sold out at the box office, but we have tickets available for what is one of the premier (and most viewed) races on the cup circuit: NASCAR Nextel Cup Series: UAW Daimler-Chrysler 400 Tickets

Correction On Poker - In our last issue we posted a note from Rita Hawn of Ultimate Poker Challenge about how you can all go down and watch the show film downtown, and even have a chance to sign up and play. The good news? We printed the URL just as they sent it. The bad news? Then sent a wrong web address. The correct one is http://www.ultimatepokerchallenge.com

Insider Tourist Traffic Tips - Our local “Road Warrior” traffic columnist Omar Sofradzija wrote an article called Survival tips for NBA fans a couple of weeks ago. It was to help the NBA All-Star fans get around (car, cab, public transportation), but has tons of good info for any visitor coming at any time.

Canadian Correction - Our apologies to our Canadian readers as we had Canadian Thanksgiving incorrectly listed in our “Hot Holidays” at the end of the newsletter.

Enjoy This Issue!

Celine Dion - A New Day

Celine Dion - A New Dayby Amy Rayner-Cooley

Celine Dion in “A New Day…” is, in one word amazing! After only one song, I was not only completely enthralled, but I could see why “A New Day…” is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Featuring many of Celine’s most recognizable songs including, “The Power of Love”, “Because You Loved Me”, “I Drove All Night” and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”, no one will walk away from this masterpiece disappointed. Celine’s powerful voice is even more beautiful in person than I could have imagined and completely explains why this show sells out weeks in advance. Click to Read The Full Review…

Two Cases Of Mistaken Elvis Identity ‘Legends’ Impersonator On Two Mag Covers, Each Wrong Name - In a town with nearly as many Elvises as there are buffets, those who impersonate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with style, grace and real talent stand far and above the rest of the sideburned wannabes in jumpsuits. At the top is Matt Lewis, featured performer of Legends in Concert (Show Ticket Link), the celebrity tribute spectacular now in its 24th year at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. Lewis first impersonated Elvis for a school talent show when he was 12 years old. Now, six nights every week, two shows per night for the past four years, Lewis leaves the ladies swooning in the aisles with his charm, boyish good looks, commanding voice and dead-ringer compelling impersonation of the truck driver from Tupelo. Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 5 — Faster Play - with Victor H. Royer. Real world poker players, especially those used to land-based poker tournaments, tend to be comfortable in sitting around for many hours without actually playing any hands, because they understand that the real world poker tournaments are marathons that usually take many hours, and often many days to complete. As a result, they pace themselves differently compared to the world of the Internet poker tournament. Therefore, when they now find themselves sitting in front of their computer and playing on Internet poker tournament, they tend to be overwhelmed by the very nature of the game, and its accompanying speed. Hi Ted,

I was wondering if you could email the newsletter to my home email as well as my office? My home email address is (redacted for privacy).

Great newsletters by the way. My fiance and I love Las Vegas and would love to live there, not just for the strip, but for everything including it’s proximity to other attractions. We’ve been twice in the last two years and getting regular newsletters makes be feel better about not being there.

Thanks again.

Linda Clifton

Ted Responds:

Linda, Not a problem! Everyone is welcome to subscribe both with a home and work (or secondary) address so they get enjoy reading wherever they are. Anyone wishing to subscribe a first (or second) email address can use the form on our main newsletter page.

Most people who live here generally don’t go near The Strip (unless they work there or for a special night out). Las Vegas is a very different place being in the desert and with the mix of new residents from all over the world. People who move here with the attitude of enjoying the entire area as a place to live enjoy living here the most!

Hi Ted,

Love the newsletter. Have a question for you. I like to rent a vehicle while we stay in Las Vegas. I’ve heard a lot of rumors about the new central rental car facility but haven’t been able to pinpoint when it opens and exactly where it’s going to be. Do you have any updates?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Rich

Ted Responds:

Rick, I drive by it a couple times a month. It is at 7200 Gilespie Street, Las Vegas, 89123 (Google Map Link). It is on the left side of the street. I don’t have a definitive date, but it is getting close. Certainly will be sometime this year.

Special personal tip when using it:

From the looks of the traffic set-up already in place, it looks like they will encourage people to head south out of the facility, and use Warm Springs over to Las Vegas Blvd. Screw that. Turn north out of the rental car facility, and take Gilespie north up to Sunset. Left (west) on Sunset to Las Vegas Blvd. You’ll miss a lot of traffic and the intersection of Las Vegas Blvd. and I-215 (our beltway).

Or for you who enjoy using Paradise to avoid Strip traffic, north on Gilespie, turn right (east) on George Crocket Rd which will directly put you into the airport tunnel onto Paradise. Just for fun, don’t miss glancing at the Harrah’s World Headquarters at George Crocket and Bermuda if you take that route. Hope it helps and makes it more fun to look forward to your next trip!

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 4 — Real vs. Internet - with Victor H. Royer. Of course, if you are players such as myself, who has first learned to play poker in the real world, because at the time that we were so learning there not only weren’t any computers, but the world of the Internet had not even been conceived, sometimes it may be difficult for us to transition from the real world to that of the Internet. Fortunately, I am not that old as to be technologically challenged in this way, and I have actually found the world of technological innovations, and lately the world of Internet poker tournaments, to be exceptionally beneficial, interesting, entertaining, and actually quite profitable as well. Newkirk’s Notes - comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Running a few days late here. I’d love to tell you it was because of lounging around the pool in flip-flops with Jimmy Buffet playing, but I was a little under the weather. Doing better, and looking forward to enjoying our unusually warm weather.

Las Vegas Kings? - This weekend is the crescendo of the NBA All-Star game hype, which has driven intense speculation of Las Vegas getting an NBA team. The biggest buzz is the possibility of the Sacramento Kings moving to town. Kings owners are the same family that own The Palms and the city of Sacramento has been loathe to give them a new arena.

My take? I grew up in an NBA city loving the game. But the very reason that most cities chase a pro sports franchise is for the validation of being a “major league” city. It brings an identity, and gets your city lots of TV mention during the sports season.

People already know where Las Vegas is and what we are about. We don’t struggle for recognition! Add to that the fact that most people living here are transplants, and already have allegiances to their team from “back home.”

Would every game sell out? Absolutely. Probably with 40% locals and 60% visitors from the other teams’ city. This would add another 500,000 tourists a year (provided that every visitor was taking a trip here outside of their normal visiting pattern), but are the Las Vegas team players going to enjoy playing in front of a hostile crowd on their home court night after night? Just something to think about that no one has yet brought up.

Bottom Line: The longer Las Vegas begs for any major league team regardless of sport, the more it makes us look like a second rate city begging for a team to help our identity. Not needed.

Every Breath You Take - I’ve rarely seen a buzz like the one surrounding the Police reunion tour. They are stopping in Las Vegas on June 15, 2007. Tickets have sold out quickly but we do have limited tickets available for shows in most cities (not just Las Vegas): Police Reunion Tour Tickets

The Mel Brooks Musical Comedy The Producers Sells Out First Preview Performance At Paris Las Vegas - Following in the tradition of the Broadway production, the MEL BROOKS musical comedy THE PRODUCERS (ticket link) at Paris Las Vegas announced today, yesterday’s first preview performance was a sell out. “When The Producers opened on Broadway they performed to sold out audiences in New York,” said Michael Weaver, vice-president of marketing for Paris Las Vegas. “We are thrilled the Las Vegas production is following the same pattern.” Based on Mel Brooks’ Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, the show tells the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer, Max Bialystock (Brad Oscar) and Leo Bloom (Larry Raben), a mousy accountant. Together, with the help of their flamboyant director, Roger DeBris (David Hasselhoff), they hatch the ultimate scam: raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway flop and pocket the difference. Jay’s White Hot Diamond! - Since 2002, dozens of shows in Las Vegas have opened and closed each year. During this same period, Jay White as Neil Diamond (ticket link), with his powerful band, has continued to heat up the Riviera’s Le Bistro stage with a concert style performance that captivates all ages. Rumors seem to spread quickly in this town and the word is that Jay White is “Truly Amazing!” At least that’s the quote from Leeza Gibbons of “Entertainment Tonight” and the reviews are the same from Jay Leno to Neil Diamond’s mother. Even Diamond himself was quoted saying; “Jay’s tribute is my favorite!” and upon meeting, the original signed their photo; “Jay keep singing, so I can stay home and relax,” a true testament to White’s talent. Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Part 3 — Sit-n-Go - with Victor H. Royer. The other alternatives are the very popular Sit-n-Go tournaments. These take the form and structure of usually only one table tournaments, which in the game of Texas Hold’Em will mean a table of 10 players, and that is all that there will be for that tournament. This is the same structure that is usually used in the brick-and-mortar casino poker rooms and card rooms for satellite tournaments, usually referred to as one table satellites. These are also offered on the Internet in precisely the Sit-n-Go format, and they also can qualify players to other tournaments, including many of the land-based tournaments on the WPT and WSOP circuits. Dear Las Vegas Newsletter Editor,

My husband will be in Las Vegas for about four days from in 24- out28 March 2007. It is part of a 40th wedding anniversary holiday we are taking. We are staying at the Bellagio Hotel and have heard that Cirque De Soleil O is very good to see.

We are very interested in hearing some good jazz and as it doesn’t feature in any of your newsletters so far, can you tell us if there is anything good on in jazz at that time? Also, we both like swimming. I am assuming there will be indoor pools. Is there any aquacize classes available in the Bellagio pool if there is one? Sorry to be so ignorant, but have no real information on Las Vegas at all. We are also interested in the desert and its features.

Penelope Toltz.

Ted Responds:

Las Vegas is a great place to spend an anniversary, and congratulations on your 40′th. What a milestone!

You didn’t mention whether you were interested in traditional jazz or smooth (modern) jazz. We do have a traditional jazz radio station KUNV 91.5 FM which you may want to tune to when you hit town. If smooth jazz is more your taste, 105.7 FM Smooth Jazz website lists a number of events. Sorry… neither stations stream at this time. An updated list of all jazz related events usually appears here: Smooth Jazz Hotspots

No indoor pools at any of the major resorts last time we checked. Pools in Las Vegas are geared toward relaxation and recreation, not so much exercise. While I certainly applaud your commitment to exercise, this is a special occasion and it is OK to come here and enjoy letting yourself go for a few days! If anyone

Is there anyway you can create your links to articles so that they do not hijack the web page? When I click on most of your article links they go to your web site for the article which is fine, but when I am finished reading the article and I hit the back button, most of the time the article will re-appear rather than sending me back to the newsletter.

If I go to the history for the back button and click on the occurrence before the article link, it takes me completely out of my email account and I have to re-log in.

Gail Heverly-Smith

Ted Responds:

I’m guessing you are among the growing number of people who read their email online (on a web page, not using an email program) and certainly more and more people are doing so. While most of these services open up links to other web pages in new browser windows, yours evidently doesn’t. There is a simple solution:

When putting your mouse arrow (on your screen) over a web page link, click the link with your RIGHT mouse button, not the usual left button. A small menu will appear. Choose “Open In New Tab (or Window) or similar command depending you your setup. This will open the story link without closing your email!

We don’t purposely create our newsletter to “hijack” any web pages. What is happening is that when you click to read the stories, you are simply “surfing” to the page with the story and away from your email. We will consider what we can do in the future to rectify this on our end. In the meantime, the above tip is useful in any internet surfing situation where you don’t want to completely leave the present page you are on.

Hope This Helps!
