I think the new format is fantastic. It’s easy to navigate, too. I can’t wait to get back to Vegas. My wife and I were there a year ago, for the first time in our lives.(both are in late 50s) and we are going back again as soon as we can scrape up the money. Meanwhile, we look forward to the newsletter so we can keep up to date on things going on in your fine city. Thank you.

We opted to try the “downtown experience” our last trip and stayed at the Four Queens. Not the pick of the lot, I hope. In your opinion, which hotel has the nicest room…surely not the Queens…for our room left a lot to be desired. Thanks bunches!

I know we have fans of Downtown Fremont St. Experience (what many call “Old Vegas”). The rooms are less expensive and walking is much less, but not every hotel is a luxury resort. Tell us about your stays downtown (good or bad) in our Downtown/Fremont St. Experience Hotels forum.

My wife and I will be in Las Vegas on Sep 2-11 and again on Sep 14-16. I have read that the Celine Dion show is always sold out. Is that true? Do you have to purchase tickets before going to Las Vegas or can they be purchased after arrival? My wife said she has to see this show. And, after 42 years of marriage, I know that means we have to see this show, or else!!

These tickets continue to be in very high demand. As I write, only one day during that stretch is available. In general, tickets for all top shows should be purchased as far in advance as possible, but keep this in mind: Tickets are often not released for sale until 3-4 months before show date.

General suggestions for “hard to get” Vegas shows:

  1. Bookmark our Las Vegas Shows page and check back early and often. When the tickets become available, snap them up. In fact, if seeing a popular show, plan the trip around getting the show tickets if the show is a “must see”.
  2. Most Las Vegas shows are now reserved seating. Purchasing before you get here will simply get you better seats. The farther ahead the purchase, the better the seats!
  3. Info For Celine specifically:
    • Celine Tickets - This is the regular way to get them, at face value. Check back early and often.
    • Celine Premium Seating - These are great seats from a reputable, national ticket broker. You will pay more, but they have tickets for sold out dates and closer to the stage.

      More Celine:

    • Celine Dion Show Photos
    • Celine Dion Streaming Video Preview - Dial-Up Broadband

I will be arriving in Las Vegas on July 28th, 2003 and will be present for 1 week. Any suggestions as to what I just have to do while here (besides gambling of course). The 28th is my 21st birthday. Thanks in advance to all!

No better place to spend your first week of legal drinking and gambling age than in Las Vegas! I’d say to check out Casino Royale and O’Sheas where the drinks are cheap and the crowd is young and fun (I mean generally under 30). The Beach nightclub is crazy just about every night. Stay away from some of the really upscale nightclubs unless you have deep pockets and a nice wardrobe. There will be future visits for that.

OK readers, this guy is 21 so keep that in mind share your suggestions in our Travel Questions / Trip Suggestions forum.

More 21’st birthday questions:

Message Board members “sandym” and “debwils” are both bringing their daughters here to celebrate 21’st birthdays. They want advice for restaurants and things to do. Ladies … help them out! What are your favorite great restaurants in Las Vegas? What did you do on “Girls Night Out” trip to Vegas? Share in our Fun and Thrill / 21st Birthday forum.

Going to be in town the end of July, any reports on good low limit and green chip single or double deck games?

Also any Baccarat for less than green chip?

I know we have some avid blackjack and baccarat players reading. Help this guy out plus talk blackjack in our new Blackjack forum.

Featured Story: Platters, Drifters, Coasters

The Platters, Beary Hobb’s Drifters, and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters

I was fortunate enough to have my parents in from out-of-town town, and have number relatives who live here so I rounded parents, aunt and uncle, cousin and even Grandma (ranging in age from around 30 to well past retirement) and away we went to see the Platters, Drifters, and Coasters. Wouldn’t you know it: everyone had a great time. I mean a really great, really fun time … as did the entire audience.

The late Cornell Gunter was the comic genius of the Coasters, and made the original group the “Clown Princes of Rock and Roll.” This continuance performs much of the comedic material he originally created, as well as treating us to memorable hits such as Lucy Brown, Love Potion #9, Yakty Yak, A capella, Twist, Poison Ivy and more.

The Platters kept the energy level up with their smooth renditions of some memorable classics and ballads. Only You, Great Pretender, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, My Prayer, Higher and Higher and more. Their smooth, uplifting performance really left everyone feeling great.

The late Elsbeary Hobbs was the original bass singer for the Drifters. It was his deep bass notes that are featured on There Goes My Baby, the hit that started a long line of great Drifters hits and many feel helped influence what became the Motown sound.

Hobbs carried on performing into the 90’s. After his death, remaining members of his group continue the legacy. Radio staples such as This Magic Moment, Save the Last Dance For Me, Under the Boardwalk, There Goes My Baby and more spring to life in front of your eyes.

As noted, these aren’t the original member versions of the groups. Death and time have retired many of the greats who made the music famous. These continuations have various ties to the originals, and keep the tradition alive with sharp outfits, the great choreographed moves famous during this era, and a top-notch level of professionalism and showmanship.

Whether this is the “soundtrack of your life” or you’ve just always enjoyed these time-tested classics, The Platters, Beary Hobb’s Drifters, and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters show is well worth enjoying.
