EDITORS NOTE: It has been raining for 3 straight days here in Las Vegas (much needed, but I know it dampens a usually sunny Las Vegas vacation). However, that is child’s play compared to the earthquake that shook Seattle Wednesday morning. My brother and his family live in the area, and I fly through Sea-Tac on a regular basis getting a connecting flight to my hometown of Portland, OR.

From my talks with people flying SEA-LAS on my return trips, I know that people in the Seattle area love Las Vegas and assume we have pretty serious readership in that area (all we have are email addresses — except for tracking country domains, I have no clue where anyone who subscribes lives). To our friends in the Pacific Northwest, we are happy to hear that the loss of life and injuries was very minimal, and wish you and those around you the best over the next few weeks of cleanup and recovery.

SIEGFRIED & ROY - have signed their new “lifetime” contract at The Mirage. The new contract stipulates a 44 week per year schedule, and eight shows a week (down from the 10 they were doing). DANCE CLUBS - The Aladdin and Caesars are working to throw their hat into the latest casino trend to build high-end nightclubs. JUST A REMINDER - Prostitution is illegal in Clark County, Nevada (the New Jersey sized county that contains Las Vegas). FEATURE STORY: Mac King

I’m pretty happy. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a bad show. The odds are in my favor as I tend to review only established shows so we know they will be here when you get here, and if a show has been around a while (with few exceptions) it usually is making its target audience happy.

Mac King has been playing Harrah’s for over a year, shouldn’t need an introduction. He has appeared on television shows ranging from “An Evening At The Improv” to all five of NBC’s “World’s Greatest Magic” specials. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, upon seeing him you will remember him as “the guy who did the funny magic on TV.” And funny, Mac King is!

He takes the stage in a vintage plaid suit (vintage early 1900, not vintage disco era) with a story about a rope trick his grandfather taught him. You’ve seen rope tricks before? Not presented quite this way. From the first moment, you can tell that despite his sometimes silly demeanor, he has the craft of magic down.

King brings out an old fashioned chest containing his props and you never know what he is going to pull out of it next. Unlike Carrot Top, whose props are the joke themselves, Mac uses everything from worms to goldfish to a box of cereal to a stuffed tiger to perform “how did he do that” magic while leaving you laughing in the aisles. The finale is a “tribute” to Siegfried and Roy in which he makes both himself and a stuffed tiger disappear that reappear in a funny but spectacular way.

Eschewing assistants, King interacts with members from the audience using volunteers to help him in a couple of his more impressive illusions in this one-man show. It is pretty clear these aren’t audience plants. In fact, if you see this show the day or two after your wedding, you might end up on stage helping in the “Cloak of Invisibility” trick where Mac puts on a yellow rain coat, tells us to pretend he is invisible, then moves cards from the new wife to the new husband without touching either of them.

This is the best show deal in town. Period. You can’t go wrong paying $14.95 for the hour plus show, and the hour flies by. Plus, it is a perfect way to break up your afternoon gambling or sightseeing (or just recover from that “all-I-did-eat” buffet), give your feet a rest and your mind some refreshment.

I’m a big fan of Casino Royale. Their parking garage is a best kept secret (right behind the hotel, gives you quick access to Harrah’s, Venetian, Mirage), and when friends that like to booze come to town, I just tell them “Casino Royale: import beer and a shot of name-brand booze for $4.00 total.” Plus, the staff is very friendly.

The Rio buffet is really hit and miss. It was a novelty as the first “station” buffet in Las Vegas (different ethnic food stations) but pay the extra $3-4 and go to the Aladdin buffet where the food is topnotch and the decor colors don’t scream at you.

Thanks for the heads up. One of the definitions of infamous is
notorious. I was attempting to find a word that described the
wide variety of emotions various race fans felt toward him
(he was either adored or despised) and looking back,
I could have used a better choice of words. I know that NASCAR fans are very passionate about their sport and certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone.

HITCHED ON VALENTINE’S DAY - As usual, Las Vegas was a very hot destination for Valentine’s Day. Couples pulled up in pickup trucks, 18 Wheelers, and limos. Some were planned, some were spur-of-the-moment. BAD INTERSECTIONS - Once again this year, the worst intersections for traffic wrecks are on The Strip. Tropicana and LV Blvd. (The Strip) was the worst, with Flamingo and LV Blvd. coming in second. The scenery is distracting, but keeping your eyes on the road and using your turn signal might just prevent you from driving home (or turning in your rental car) with a big dent in it.

CELEBRITY CHEF - Well-known local chef Les Kincaid’s 1.5 hour weekly show features famous restaurateurs, celebrity chefs, cookbook authors, winemakers, vintners, master sommeliers and all of the entertainers living or working in Las Vegas. This is a “must” for those of you who enjoy the top notch epicurean offerings that Las Vegas now offers. The show airs at noon Pacific time on Saturdays on KDWN 720 AM which you can listen to online at http://www.broadcast.com/radio/talk/kdwn/ The show is now also aired on the Cable Radio Network (check your cable listings for station).

DALE EARNHARDT - Thousands have showed up at the NASCAR Cafe (Sahara Hotel, see our restaurant review at http://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-15.htm ) to pay tribute to the infamous driver who lost his life in last weekend’s Daytona 500. FEATURE STORY: Clint Holmes

Someone once joked that Las Vegas is full of headliners who are “the biggest names you have never heard of.” You get off the plane, drive down the Strip, and see names like Danny Gans or Clint Holmes and you see their faces in the tourist magazines and ask yourself “What do they do, and why are they worth some of my hard earned gambling money”?

Actually, Clint Holmes is no stranger to the music business. In 1974, he scored a #1 hit with “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael)” and over the years appeared as Joan Rivers’ sidekick and announcer on “The Late Show” as well as work with both Entertainment Tonight and a successful run in Atlantic City.

You may enter the showroom not knowing who he is, but you won’t leave that way. His mother was a classically trained opera singer from England and his dad was a jazz musician from the US That left Clint blessed with not only an amazing technical singing ability, but the emotional flow to put with the pitch. Combined with his live 12-piece band and the modernized showroom at Harrah’s and you have every element for a great show.

Clint performs the work of other artists as well as original songs in a free-flowing expose of his life story. Not Broadway, but a little bit of background and banter here and there to weave it together. Fortunately, his life story is interesting, and the music is enjoyable.

His camaraderie with musical director Bill Fayne is sincere as their friendship dates back many years. While most stars want the spotlight to shine on them alone, he shares it with every member of the band, each extremely talented in their own right working together for a magnificent collaboration.

This show is “Old Vegas” style entertainment. The mood is upbeat, friendly, and warm. The songs range from jazz to soul and over the course of the show, Holmes creates a strong bond with the audience. If you want to hear techno and see people fly off the walls, try De La Guarda. If your tastes lean more toward sitting with a drink and enjoying and appreciating a fine artist and showman take the stage and entertain you, pocket a couple of chips from your first winning session at the tables and set them aside to see Clint Holmes.

LAS VEGAS NEWS - of interest to tourists:

THE VENETIAN - continues to be a huge success for owner Sheldon Adelson despite a rough opening (the hotel wasn’t quite ready), union pressure (it is non-union), and higher interest notes (construction funding) than a large corporation would have been able to garner. The hotel is showing a profit, and they are finally getting serious regarding the expansion that will double the hotel’s size. In addition, expansion and remodeling of high roller suites will place the hotel in competition for “whales” (the highest of the high rollers with casino credit lines starting at $1 million). MGM THEME PARK - is changing its focus and the name. Except for the Sky Screamer and a couple of other rides, the rides will be removed and the focus of the park will shift to hosting movie premieres, concerts, and TV shows. The new moniker is “The Park at MGM Grand”. The potential of the park was never fully realized, and ended up not fitting into the new “adults only” theme that many Las Vegas resorts are marketing. SNOW - As recently reported, Mt. Charleston gets snow during the winter providing a winter wonderland less than an hour from Las Vegas. It is also a popular spot to live for those who want to be reletively close to Las Vegas but don’t want to deal with the summer temperatures and don’t mind the winter snow. It is free to the public and will feature food and drink, classic cars, and a bungee run. BEST HOTEL - The Bellagio was picked as the #1 hotel with the most perfect settings and amenities for honeymooning couples by 100 travel agents. FEATURE STORY: The Dream King

Elvis has returned to the building. His legend never left Las Vegas, but now when we think “Elvis impersonator” we think of a guy with a bad dye job, gold sunglasses, and very long sideburns who has seen way too many trips to the buffet. If that is your impression of a “Vegas Elvis”, you have not seen Trent Carlini.

Carlini’s show starts with a video tribute to Elvis, mixing clips of Presley with a Carlini narraration that is part tribute to Elvis and part the story of Carlini’s devotion and love of the music. When Carlini hits the stage, you have to do a double-take because he is virtually a head-to-toe living replica of the younger Elvis.

Throughout the 70 minute show, Carlini takes you through a journey of the various stages of the life of Elvis in song, and does so in matching costume. He appears first as the young Elvis, then performs more work from his early career in a military uniform, after a short but insightful video montage of actual Elvis army footage and interviews. From there, he dons leis and a hawaiin shirt to sing hits from Elvis’ movies.

After another short video, he performs a tribute to the ‘68 comeback “Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” special complete with the black leather outfit. No tribute to The King would be complete without the “Vegas Years” with the big white jumpsuit and a lighthearted lauging version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight”. Elvis fans are probably familiar with the live Las Vegas version of said song done by Elvis where something got him going and he couldn’t stop laughing throughout a part of the song. This segement also included him handing out scarves to some of the lucky ladies in the audience.

If you are a big Elvis fan (or just learned quite a bit watching the many TV specials and documentaries shown on cable TV), you will appreciate many of the nuances like the laughing part that Carlini tosses in.

I’ve seen plenty of Elvis impersonators here in Las Vegas, and most of them get by on the look and moves, with vocal’s that are just in the general vicinity of Presley. Even if you are just a casual fan, you can’t help but to be impressed not just by the physical appearance and moves, but by the voice. Just for fun, I looked well away from the stage a couple of times and just listened. Carlini sounds like Presley. Every note, every cadence, every breath. This was confirmed as I popped his CD in my car during the drive home.

My only complaint? The Boardwalk Showroom is pretty intimate and I thought the sound was well mixed but a touch too loud (in fact, causing he microphone feedback a couple of times). Although Carlini tours the U.S. with a complete backing band (and a ticket price to match), this show is sung live to a backing track but Carlini’s stage presence makes you forget the lack of a band. On the flip side, there isn’t a bad seat in the room. In fact, I sat toward the rear and apprciated that aspect for taking in both the show and his interaction with the crowd.

Obviously, you are going to enjoy this show quite a bit more if you have even a remote interest in Elvis. It is a true tribute show, so don’t expect some guy up doing jokes or magic tricks. This show is Elvis. While there were plenty of couples and guys in the audience, it especially appeared to be a great “girls night out” show as the front row was filled with women doing a little screamng and hollaring.

Thanks, I am indeed feeling better but as a “one man band” (I write this newsletter as well as editing, updating, and maintaining the websites) I fell behind on my schedule. I’m happy to say I’m getting caught up.

Fitzgeralds downtown has an “all you can eat” filet mignon buffet. Don’t waste your time. The quality of the buffet is sub-par, the offerings are meager, and the fillet isn’t that great. While I don’t believe they offer filet mignon, Main St. Station buffet downtown continues to be excellent with almost unlimited variety every night.

LAS VEGAS NEWS - of interest to tourists:

TERRIBLE’S HOTEL CASINO - This hotel which sits on the site of the old Continental Hotel at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from the Strip) is worth checking out if you drive to town or rent a car. The casino is very nice with a roomy sports book (for a smaller property) and both the buffet and coffee shop are located upstairs away from the casino noise. Plus, a number of food specials (posted both outside and throughout the casino) are available 24/7 in the coffee shop.

The big news? They are using coinless slots that let you take the paper voucher you receive when you cash out and insert it in another machine for play. My early complaint about coinless slots is that you had to go redeem the voucher every time you switched machines but that is a moot point here. FILM AND PRINT - If it seems like you can’t turn on the TV or check out the movie listings without seeing Las Vegas, you are right. Production companies are flocking here to shoot commercials and launch products, and rarely a week goes by without work on a major motion picture. LOW PAY - Las Vegas placed 82nd out of 125 metropolitan cities in a recent study of which cities are the best places to make and save money. Despite the growth, we ranked low in job quality, education, wealth, household income and housing costs. Despite low unemployment, many blue collar jobs don’t pay the big bucks and professionals can expect to start out at a lower rate of pay than the national average. ART AND ARCHITECTURE - The Smithsonian is sponsoring trips to Las Vegas to explore an oft-ignored side of Las Vegas. ROMP THROUGH DOWNTOWN - The Review-Journal just published an interesting article with photos about the Fremont St. Experience (better known to some as “downtown” or “Glitter Gulch”). XFL and WWF - owner / promoter Vince McMahon seems to have a love affair with Las Vegas. The debut XFL game last Sat. night was broadcast live from Las Vegas, drawing 17% of all viewing households (about twice what they expected and more than the much touted NBA double-header the same day.) In addition, the WWF Feb. 25′th Pay-Per-View “No Way Out” will be broadcast from Las Vegas (4:45 PM Pacific).

The XFL was a big hit in the sports books as well, drawing much more wagering than expected. Las Vegas has embraced the team in a large way, but part of that is our way of lashing back at the NFL and NBA. Despite having a metro area population larger than Indianapolis, Orlando, or New Orleans, the leagues frown at owners even thinking about moving here (or awarding an expansion franchise) because of the legal sports betting.

Whether the XFL turns into a hit nationwide remains to be seen. We will report on the XFL when it brings Las Vegas to the spotlight as it did this last weekend, but not regularly.

FEATURE STORY: David Copperfield

When you are going to see the show of the most famous illusionist
since Houdini, expectations are bound to be high, but I must confess that
David Copperfield lived up to my every hope.

From the moment he appears on stage (from nowhere of course), till he
takes his final bow, the entire audience is on the edge of its seats.

The tour, titled Unknown Dimension is designed to allow the audience
to be involved — so watch out because there’s a good chance you might
be picked like I was!

So what did he do to me? Make me disappear? Levitate me? No, he
changed the colour of my pants.

In the cheekiest trick of the whole show, the man who vanished the
Statue of Liberty, levitated across the Grand Canyon, and walked
through the Great Wall of China, swapped the colour of my underwear
with another girl, in a trick which included his classy joke; Should
I do it the hard way … or the easy way. The hard? OK, I’ll take her
out to dinner first. Great.

You could be lucky though. Two members of the crowd were levitated
whilst sitting on a huge red sofa, others had a tissue changed into a
mouse in their hands. This is nothing though, compared with the
finale acts. One sees him picking thirteen members of the audience at
random, and making them disappear (some of them, apparently appear
miles, away, though I’m not sure if that’s all hype), and in the
other, he transports someone anywhere they want to be.

Tonight, he invites on to the stage a teenage boy, who, we are told,
has always wanted to go to Bali. And, believe it or not (literally),
he takes him there. A video screen appears. We see a beach, the sea,
and cameras and crew. A clock shows the time and Bali live is in
the corner.

Yeah, yeah, you’re thinking. That’s ridiculous. The piece in Bali is
all prerecorded. They went and filmed it. We thought the same.
Until he began throwing silver balls in to the audience, with his back
turned. If you caught one you had to go on the stage. He lines the
people up, and takes a Polaroid of them, which he gets one of them to
date and sign. Next, we gets one of then to think of two random
letters, and write them on his arm.

He puts the Polaroid in the boy’s pocket, and leads him to sit on a
throne-like chair. It is on an arm, which moves off the stage, and
suspends over the audience. He throws a silver sheet over them.
Flash. Bang. They are gone … all eyes move to the video screen. A
similar sheet is held over the sand on the beach. Flash. Bang.
There they are. David shows his arm to the camera … with the same
letters on it … the boy takes the Polaroid out … the same audience
members, and signature.

People around me start to scream Ahhhhh! Its raining!!! Spray
covers the audience. Flash. Bang. Mr. Copperfield stands on the
table in front of us, with a grin on his face, throwing sand from his
pockets. Wow.

For those interested in visiting the Gold Coast, a free shuttle runs from the Barbary Coast on The Strip (departing at the side entrance) to the Gold Coast from 9 AM to Midnight every 15-20 minutes. (This is also a great way to get over to The Rio for free as you don’t have to be a hotel guest or produce any ID.)

Every year, I hear stories about people who stake out their seats in the sportsbooks as early as 5 AM to make sure they have a spot for that weekend. I am not aware of any hotel that sets up a separate or expanded area showing all the games, but I don’t pretend to have visited every casino during March Madness. Set up a tent with 50 TV’s and a satellite better area and you’ll gain a lot of happy new customers!
